The 25th (we think) Annual MHW took place on Moreton Island early August with some sensational weather and good beach fishing. What started out as a bunch of young mates enjoying a weeks fishing has turned into a 25 year tradition. Although we have had a swag of ‘guests’ join us over the years, essentially it has remained the same group of 10 mates – we are just older and more sensible now!
The fishing this year was interesting in that we saw large numbers of Australian Salmon caught. We have only ever caught one before. All were released as they are not considered a table fish. The netters had been working the beach pretty hard so fishing was typically patchy. Apart from the usual Tailor, Whiting and Tarwine, other interesting beach captures were a School Mackerel, a Stargazer and a school Jew taken on a pilly mid morning. There were plenty of busting fish and terns working along the backs of the gutters which were mainly Australian Salmon, Tailor, Macktuna and School Mackerel from what I could tell. We saw a few sharks entering the shallows also which is always a sign of plenty of activity in the gutters. It was also good to see the whales inshore – a sign that the Cobia might be coming onto the coffee rock patches.
