The Cobia were on around the Four Beacons last Saturday morning, and should be around for a while yet! I caught this solid 24.7kg fish and I heard another similar size was taken after I left. Conditions were perfect – it was the turn of the tide and the beacons were holding good bait schools. I had two live Pike out in my burley trail. One midwater under a balloon and the other near the bottom. Within 30 minutes the midwater bait was engulfed on my 10kg Baitrunner outfit. With the beacons just 25 metres astern and the anchor still down, I had plenty of hazards to potentially break me off, but luckily the fish didn’t do the usual long runs. I was fishing with the absolute maximum pressure you can put on 10kg line, as evident by the straightened hook photo below! It’s interesting to note the stomach contents consisted of mainly small Sand Crabs which is their main diet when they move into Moreton Bay. I also had some fun with multiple hook ups on Longtail Tuna and Bonito. These fish were working bait schools upwind along the banks from Shark Spit to the Sandhills.
